A change of tone for the McCain campaign?
The McCain campaign has a gaping wound that is bleeding undecided voters. That wound was inflicted by the racism and repugnant politics that they have spent much time and loving care cultivating. Now that it has proved imprudent to address your opponent as “that one” and since mainstream America has discovered the sickening behavior of some very racist and backwards McCain supporters the tone is beginning to shift.
It saddened me when during the last debate when the finger was pointed and the words “That one” were uttered. I hate to beat a dead horse (that could be a great euphemism for the McCain campaign) but let’s look at that comment and how condescending and elitist it was. Those ignorant McCain supporters shouting “off with his head” got their ideas from somewhere. Even if this deeply seeded racism has lived in their hearts it has been fed by his campaign.
I feel that the comments of John Lewis are completely on point. The actions and words of McCain supporters are reminiscent of Wallace’s campaign milieu. Until recently they have done nothing but promote this heinous tone. Now that it the polls are reflecting how dismayed the general public is McCain’s tactics are shifting. His response to Lewis’ comments was “this I am saddened that John Lewis, a man I’ve always admired, would make such a brazen and baseless attack on my character and the character of the thousands of hardworking Americans who come to our events to cheer for the kind of reform that will put America on the right track.”
Is he seriously defending his rabid supporters? Shouldn’t someone be questioning the character and intention of a mob screaming, “Off with his head!” Let’s just all bury our heads (while we still have them) in the sand and welcome this fanatical mob mentality that lost us another American hero that fought everyday for his country too, Martin Luther King Jr. Then you have Bobby May a former McCain campaign chairman who wrote a blog so disgusting and bigoted that I find it hard to mention it here lest it gets more attention than it deserves. These are the supporters of the GOP ticket. I pray that they are not the majority and find it hard to accept anyone aligning themselves with them in anyway.
The backlash of this and the response of the McCain party finally reared its head when John McCain told a supporter at one of his events that there was nothing to fear from an Obama presidency and admitted that Senator Obama is a good man. Will we continue to see level of respect for his opponent throughout the rest of the campaign? I think we will as long as they feel it is prudent for their agenda.
Um, sis’, you should probably not hold your breath. McCain’s been quoted saying “after I whip his you know what at the debate, we’re going out 24/7″. That was yesterday.
I would expect more of the behavior we’ve seen from his wingnut base. After all, they’re the only ones he’s got left.
You are probably right. I think that their behavior will only help Obama win the presidency, lets just hope that they are too ignorant to catch on to that.
I think we’ll continue to see John McCain committing himself in words to many often contradicting things without following it up with actions. Just saying, history often repeats itself.
The robocalls say it all. I don’t know how McCain looks in the mirror each morning; but this is going to be a nasty two weeks–and beyond. The escalattion of the Acorn issue, along with additional rhetorical claims of “Obama-otherness” has no where to go but down. I truly believe we are in the ride of our lives. ~k
The McCain campaign changes tone by the hour.
